Appendix B
PLOTTING LANGUAGES
THe DMP-160 Series plotter has been designed for ease of use --- you can fully utilize the capabilities of your plotter without knowing the details of plotting languages. This appendix provides language references and supplementary language information for programmers.
Reference Sources
Listed below are sources for detailed information on the plotter languages supported by DMP-160 Series plotters.

Language Emulation Exceptions
The DMP-160 Series plotter does not respond to some HP-GL and HP-GL/2 commands exactly as described by the HP manuals. These exception commands are described below.
HP-GL Exception Commands
<esc> .A or OI; Output Identification
To maintain software compatibility, the DMP-160 Series plotter responds with a similar HP plotter model number: "7585B" or "7586B" if in roll feed mode.
QP; Automatic Pen Pickup
This command is ignored. The DMP-160 Series plotter automatically raises a lowered pen from the media after approximately two seconds of inactivity. See also "AUTO-CAPPING" under "Configuration Menu" in "Chapter 4."
CA; Designate Alternate Character Set
CS; Designate Standard Character Set
The DMP-160 Series plotter always draws HP-GL characters with an arc font, automatically adjusting character spacing to simulate HP fixed-space or variable-space arc or vector fonts. Character sets 0 through 59, and 99 are supported. All characters are available in each set, though some may be formed a bit differently than equivalent HP characters. Character sets -1 (downloadable) and 101 (Kanji) are not supported.
CT; Chord Tolerance
If the Chord Tolerance (CT) command specifies chord deviation, or the Circle (CI), Arc Absolute (AA), Arc Relative (AR), Edge Wedge (EW), Fill Wedge (WG), or Ploygon Mode (PM) commands specify a chord of 5 degrees or less, then the DMP-160 Series plotter automatically uses its own smooth curve routine to draw the respective circle, arc, wedgw, or polygon.
However, if the Line Type (LT0) command is in effect, the plotter automatically uses 5-degree chords to draw dots at the plotted points for the deviation chord type. For chord angles (CT0) while the LT0 command is in effect, the plotter will use the specified degrees to draw the dots at the plotted points, even if the specified degrees are less than 5-degree chords.
DP; Digitize Point
After receiving a Digitize Point command, the plotter enters the Digitize mode, as indicated on the LCD. Set the plotter off-line and use the arrow keys to position the pen over the point to be digitized. Press the Enter key to enter the x - y coordinates. Typically, the Output Status (OS) command is sent to see if the plotter has data to report. The plotting software then reads the digitized information with the Output Digitized Point (OD) command. Note that the DMP-160 Series plotter reports the last software-commanded up or down pen status as the digitized pen status.
IM; Input Masks
The service and poll parameters are ignored since these only have meaning for the GPIB (HP-IB) interface, which is not used with the DMP-160 Series plotter.
NR; Not Ready
Upon receipt of the NR command, the plotter goes to local mode and extends the media fully forward for viewing. The LCD shows "HP-GL NOT READY." Press the "1" key to load new media or press the "2" key to resume with the current media.
OB; Output Character Box Dimensions
The DMP-10 Series plotter always responds to this command by sending all zeros ("0.0000,0.0000,0.0000,0.0000").
OK; Output Key
The DMP-160 Series plotter always responds to this command by sending a zero.
OS; Output Status
Bit 4 (ready for data) is always set for the DMP-160 Series plotter, and cannot be cleared.
OT; Output Carousel Type
The DMP-160 Series plotter always reports with a drafting type carousel ("3") and a number that depends on the value of the # OF PENS configuration parameter: "1" for 1 pen, "3" for 2 pens, "7" for 3 pens, "15" for 4 pens, "31" for 5 pens, "63" for 6 pens, "127" for 7 pens, or "255" for 8 pens. For example, if # OF PENS = 8, the response is "3, 255."
SG; Select Pen Group
The plotter treats this command just like a Select Pen (SP) command. Use the PENS/GROUP configuration parameter to control pen grouping on the DMP-160 Series plotter.
HP-GL No Operation Commands
The DMP-160 Series plotter ignores the following commands if ENCAP is set ON (see under "Service Mode" in "Chapter 5"):
<esc> .K; Abort Graphic Instruction
<esc> .R; Reset
<esc> .T; Configure Memory
The DMP-160 Series plotter ignores the following commands regardless of the setting for ENCAP:
<esc> .Q; Set Monitor Mode
BF; Buffer Plot
CC; Character Chord Angle
DL; Downloadable Character
DS; Designate Character Set Into Slot
EC; Enable Cut Line
FR; Advance Frame
FS; Force Select
GP; Group Pen
IC; Input Character
IV; Invoke Character Set
UC; User Defined Character
VA; Velocity Adaptive
VN; Velocity Normal
WD; Write to Display
HP-GL/2 Exception Commands
<esc> .A or OI; Output Identification
To maintain software compatibility, the DMP-160 Series plotter responds with a similar HP plotter model number: "7585B" or "7586B" if in roll feed mode.
AD; Alternate Font Definition
SD; Standard Font Definition
HP-GL/2 character sets 0,14 and 277 map to set 21; character set 38 maps to set 6; and character set 267 maps to set 43. The DMP-160 Series plotter ignores type face parameters, since it always draws characters with an arc font.
CT; Chord Tolerance Mode
See discussion of "CT" under "HP-GL Exception Commands."
DP; Digitize Point
See discussion of "DP" under "HP-GL Exception Commands."
DV; Define Variable Text Path
Paths 2 and 3, and line 1 are not supported.
NR; Not Ready
Upon receipt of this command, the DMP-160 Series plotter goes into the view state for the number of seconds specified as a parameter, then returns to remote state.
OS; Output Status
See discussion of "OS" under "HP-GL Exception Commands."
RF; Raster Fill Definition
This command uses fill approximation.
HP-GL/2 No Operation Commands
The DMP-160 Series plotter ignores the following commands if ENCAP is set ON (see under "Service Mode" in "Chapter 5"):
<esc> .U; End Flush Mode
CR; Set Color Range for Relative Color Data
CF; Character Fill
DL; Downloadable Character
EC; Enable Cutter
FR; Frame Advance
MC; Merge Control
MG; Message
MT; Media Type
NP; Number of Pens
PC; Pen Color Assignment
QL; Quality Level
ST; Sort
SV; Screened Vector
TD; Transparent Data
TR; Transparency Mode
UL; User-Defined Line Type
