DMP-160 Series Plotters Operation Manual

Chapter 2

INSTALLATION

This chapter tells you how to set up the plotter and connect it to a computer. It also covers the installation of optional hardware. For information on configuring the plotter to work with your computer and its software, see the Configuration Menu in Chapter 4: Operation.

Set Up the Plotter

Connect the Interface Cable

All DMP-160 Series plotters include a standard RS-232C serial interface data cable.

Note: Make sure that both the computer and the plotter are switched off or unplugged before connecting them with cables.

  1. Locate an unused serial I/O (input/output) port on your computer, and determine the type of connector that fits it. If uncertain, consult your computer system's documentation, dealer, or manufacturer for more information on your computer's I/O ports.
  2. Connect the female 25-pin connector end of the included serial data cable to the back of the plotter. Connect the other end of the data cable to your computer's serial port, or to one of the included adapters (if required) and then to your computer's serial port.

Check Voltage and Plug In

Before connecting the plotter to an electrical outlet, make sure that the plotter is set for the voltage that your outlet supplies. A label on the back of the plotter next to its power cord connector lists the plotter's voltage requirements.

CAUTION: The plotter is to be used only with a power outlet that is properly grounded to earth. Use of an ungrounded outlet exposes the operator to risk of electric shock and may also lead to malfunction of the plotter.

DMP-160 Series plotters are equipped with a voltage selection panel that lists more than one voltage. Each voltage listed on the panel has a hole next to it. The hole next to the plotter's present voltage setting has a pin in it. Verify that the present voltage setting matches that of your electrical outlet before plugging in the plotter. If it does not match, see Voltage Conversion in Chapter 5.

After verifying that your plotter is set for the correct voltage and fusing, attach the power cord to the plotter and plug it in to a grounded electrical outlet.
Switch On the Plotter

The plotter's power switch is located on the front right-hand side of the plotter. Press on the I side of the power switch to turn on the plotter. After the power-on memory test has finished, the plotter will beep and the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) window on its control panel will show:

USER 1 ONLINE
SHEET NOT LOADED

Before using your plotter with the host computer, you must configure the plotter using its control panel (see Chapter 4). See Quick Start in Chapter 1 for a list of items that must be configured.

Note: After first switching on the plotter, allow it to warm up for about 15 seconds before plotting. To turn off the plotter, press on the O side of the plotter's power switch. Wait at least 5 seconds after switching off the power to allow its memory to reset before switching the plotter on again.

Unreadable LCD
If the plotter's power comes on but the LCD is unreadable from your angle of vision:
  1. Switch off the plotter, wait five seconds, then switch it on again.
  2. After the plotter completes its power-on memory test and beeps, press the Menu key on the control panel two times. This will select the LCD CONTRAST menu.
  3. Press the UP or DOWN arrow keys on the control panel until the display is readable. Then press the Online key to exit the menus, or press the Menu key to access the other menus.
