How to install the Umax Astra 610S Scanner in Windows XP:

We came across this older scanner recently, and it had an ISA DTC-1831\1851 (UDS-IS11 Rev. A) SCSI adapter with it.
After doing a lot of research, we determined that this scanner (and lots of others) was packaged with several versions of this adapter. There's some great documentation about these adapters HERE.
We had problems getting Windows XP to recognize it until we set the jumper J1 on PNR instead of PNP. (jumper closed)
We set the wait state jumper to 0 (zero; jumper J2 closed), although XP set up the scanner on all device IDs. I'm not sure if this jumper setting caused that or not--I haven't explored that yet...we just disabled all of them but the first one in the device manager. (see screenshot below)

Device Manager

This is how we did it:
  • Install the drivers for the SCSI adapter when the system prompts for drivers. You can download them HERE, but you'll have to expand the file after download (be warned--it automatically does it in the current directory with a DOS prompt).

  • After the above installation is finished, you'll have to download the scanner software:
This scanner software will even allow you to use your scanner on a network as a scanner server so others on your network can access your scanner. I thought that was pretty cool ;-)

Once you have restarted Windows XP, run Photoshop or your imaging application to Import VistaScan32 or just run the VistaScan software.

  • You should be all set!
